Myopia is one of the most common refractive errors people develop around the world. It is estimated by the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) that almost 30% of Canadians have myopia.

Not only is it widespread, it is also starting to occur at younger ages. So, what can you do to manage your or your loved one’s myopia symptoms?

The first step to managing your myopia is to book an appointment with your optometrist. Their input can help preserve your sight against myopia.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is the clinical term to describe nearsightedness, the inability to clearly see objects at a distance. Almost 30% of Canadians are considered to have myopia, but this number is expected to jump considerably higher. The CAO estimates that over 50% of the entire world population is suspected to have myopia by 2050.

Myopia is generally caused by a refractive error that forces the light that enters your eye to focus improperly on your retina. In cases of myopia, your eyeball can have a longer shape which can result in your cornea and lens refracting light differently.

There are a variety of things that can play a part in the development of myopia. Some of these risk factors include:

  • Your family health history. If either or both of your parents have myopia, the chances of you developing the same condition increases.
  • Growing older. Old age has been attributed to a variety of refractive errors, including myopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism.

Myopia in Children

One demographic that seems to be developing myopia more and more is children. According to research, around 30% of children between the ages of 11 and 13 have some degree of myopia, and that number is expected only to increase over time.

To slow the progression of myopia in your child, we offer MiSight 1 Day contact lenses. These contact lenses are specifically designed to slow the development of myopia, as well as be easy for your child to use and manage.
